“The advocacy group Parent Leaders for Accelerated Curriculum and Education is pressing the city to keep the program in place and administer this year’s test. Co-President Yiatin Chu said the new changes harm students of color and those from low-income families. She said administering the test to all students in pre-K would have been “the most objective option.”
“It’s only based on the parents’ initiation, reliant on the same engaged parents who know how to navigate the system,” she said. “How likely is a teacher to say ‘no’ to those parents? The chances are very little.”
She also said that continuing the practice of giving priority to siblings “is actually doubling down on the demographics” of the programs. “It’s definitely going to benefit the families that are already in those schools, big time,” she said.”
