New York, NY – October 23, 2025 – PLACE NYC (Parent Leaders for Accelerated Curriculum and Education) applauds today’s decision by New York’s Court of Appeals, New York State’s highest court, to dismiss a baseless lawsuit challenging the city’s gifted-and-talented (G&T), screened middle and high school and the Specialized High Schools’ admissions policies. This ruling reaffirms the integrity of merit-driven selection processes that ensure every child, regardless of background, has a fair shot at excellence in our public schools.
The five-judge majority rejected claims of discriminatory intent and failure to provide a “sound basic education” under the state constitution. “Today’s decision is a win for parents and students who believe in rewarding hard work and nurturing potential,” said PLACE NYC’s co-president Yiatin Chu. “Since our founding in 2019, ideologically driven groups have sought to undermine these programs. This ruling sends a clear message that New York will continue to prioritize student achievement and provide opportunities for accelerated learners,” added Chu.
