More NYC students from poorest districts accepted to ‘Gifted’ program rises after admissions shakeup

Lucas Liu, a member of the Community Education Council in Manhattan’s District 3 and of the parent group PLACE NYC, which opposed removing the test and wants to expand the gifted program, argued that the teacher recommendations officials relied on for this year are “subjective.”

Liu said that the test that officials previously used wasn’t perfect but “it gave an indication of a child’s ability. Having some sort of quantitative assessment or measure is a good thing.”
