New York City will continue its “pause” on middle school academic-screened admissions for the 2022-23 admissions cycle. School offers will be made based on the student’s eligibility, seat category, priority, ranked preference and lottery number; please refer to the DOE website for more details.
Last year, many parents asked the DOE for their child’s lottery number before they submitted their middle school application; the DOE did not provide the number until AFTER applications were closed. This year, parents began making the same request in early January and the DOE responded within a week.

Decode Your Lottery Number
Once you receive your lottery number from the DOE, you can interpret the hexadecimal number using the table below. Your hexadecimal lottery number will look like this:
6ba829b3-fa99-4752-a931-2119fb0c1fea
- Use the first two characters of your lottery number; in the example, it is “6b”.
- Look for 6b in the table below. This correspond to 42.2%.
- This means that 42.2% of students have the same or better lottery numbers than your child.*
