Primary Election 2021: “Do I have to rank 5?” and Other Questions for Voting Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the Big Day

NYC public school education is in your hands. Make your voice count and vote tomorrow June 22. We want to make it easy for parents so here are some answers to questions we heard. Our updated recommendations on who to vote for are right below.

WHERE DO I VOTE?
Find your pollsite

WHEN CAN I VOTE?
Polls are open from 6am to 9pm.

DO I NEED TO MEMORIZE MY RANKED CHOICE LIST?
No.You can definitely bring notes with you. We suggest our borough-specifc Voter’s Guides:
Manhattan Guide
Queens Guide
Brooklyn Guide

SHOULD I RANK THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CANDIDATES?
No, you don’t have to. You can vote for just 1 candidate but you should rank at least three in the categories where there is a choice. Why? Because Ranked Choice Voting can produce a winner who did not get the most ‘first’ votes. So make sure you can live with all who you choose.

CAN I RANK TWO ‘NUMBER 1’?
No! This is actually a big one — your ballot will be disqualified if you vote for two AT THE SAME RANKING in any of the ranked elections (note for some positions, such as District Attorney, you can only choose one candidate). So please don’t double rank. In case of a tie, please rank one candidate as #1, and the other as #2.

CAN I BRING MY CHILDREN?
Yes! We heard a lot of voters say that they were worried about trying to vote with kids in tow. But bring them! In fact, we found that it was a fun and educational experience for our children. The poll watchers in NYC are so enthusiastic and want kids to learn too.
